Facebook Launches New Organ Donor Status Tool
You can now let others know you're a registered organ and tissue donor and share your story about when, where or why you decided to become a donor using a new tool Facebook tool launched May 1. With this new tool, millions of Americans—and 1 billion Facebook users—will be exposed to the lifesaving message of organ and tissue donation. Users can add their organ and tissue donor status to their timelines and then share their stories with others. If you’re not a registered donor, the new feature gives you a link to your state donor registry to become one. Donate Life America orchestrated the partnership, which can produce major benefits for the organ, eye and tissue donation community by bringing major exposure to the need for more registered donors and leading people to publicly identify themselves as donors.
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced the addition of the new tool in an interview with ABC News on Good Morning America on May 1. ABC followed up Zuckerberg’s interview by featuring donation stories on World News Tonight, Nightline and Live! with Kelly Ripa. ESPN, which is owned by ABC, also featured stories that promote organ and tissue donation throughout the day.
